The Mission of the Director of Worship:

The Worship Director is to provide creative direction and leadership for the Perceptions worship service. This includes planning, implementing, and evaluating all aspects of the service.

At present this is a part-time position (10-15 hours/week).

Team Leadership
  • Provide staff leadership and support for the Perceptions Worship team to ensure the quality of worship, in order to reach our mission objective. This team includes the pastors and other key leaders of the worship teams.
  • Lead the regular meetings of the Perceptions ministry team to design and evaluate creative worship. Direct and coordinate all of the worship arts components for the services. This can be delegated to others, but it is the Perceptions Worship Director’s responsibility to ensure that all the elements are ready for the service.
  • Direct and coordinate the necessary technical personnel team to obtain, maintain, and operate all tech support equipment. Recruit, train, and schedule team. This can be delegated but it is the Perception’s Worship Director’s responsibility to ensure that all technical needs are met each week.
  • Meet with and work cooperatively with pastoral staff to ensure effective planning and coordination. This will be vital to the use of shared space.
  • Establish and maintain records for the ministry, following an approved budget.
Music Direction
  • Set the direction and quality of the musical dimension of worship. Provide musical guidance, coordination, standards, and supervision.

Direct all aspects of musical performance for the Perceptions worship. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Recruit and lead the musicians and vocalists in rehearsals and services.
  • Create and assign schedules for musicians, worship participants, technical, and other personnel. Alternating teams may be created.
  • Purchase music and worship related materials, as well as cataloging and storage.
  • Subscribe to music services to obtain new music and arrangements; adhering to licensing requirements.
Expectations
  • The Director is to be visible in the life of the church, particularly being present on Sunday morning.
  • The Director is an integral part of the staff of First United Methodist Church and is to attend staff meetings, social functions, and retreats as requested.
  • Practice healthy communication with staff members and laity.
  • Respect deadlines and common courtesies.
  • The Perceptions Worship Director is a member of LIFT (Leading in Faith Together) and is expected to attend meetings.
  • Be or become proficient in the church’s presentation software.
  • Meets annually with the Staff Parish Relations Committee for consultation and performance review.
Qualities:
  • Understands his/her work as a ministry, able to give witness to personal experience of God’s grace at work in his/her life and is committed to personal spiritual growth.
  • Shares this church’s vision of an effective worship ministry and a personal commitment to implement that vision.
  • Accomplished in communication, and has a positive mental attitude.
  • Has the ability to prioritize tasks, plan programs, implement shared plans, and evaluate the ministries.
Education and Experience:
  • Suitable, positive experience is desirable.
  • Musical training preferred.
  • Knowledgeable in aspects of worship and music styles.
Accountability:
  • The Senior Pastor has the final authority relating to decisions about the music and worship ministry.
  • The Worship Director is supervised by the Senior Pastor.
